The cable cars in Obertauern - a history
Once there was a rope with a knot…
What would you do today without the 26 cable car and lift facilities in Obertauern of Austria? And how did it all start, back then?
In 1948 Obertauern installed the first mountain ascending facility: with a rope and a knot to hold tight the first “ski lift” was started.
Just imagine that from 1948 until 1960 the pistes were still groomed and trampled down by skiers themselves, for one hour of piste trampling there were 3 free rides on offer. Streets and avalanche protection constructions were extended in 1950 and in 1950 the very first tow-lifts were implemented and erected. Between 1952 and 1961 a number of modern cable car and tow-lift skiing facilities are installed, and 1969 various lift facilities are connected, creating a basic form of the famous Tauern Loop Ski Trail, which in 1985 was completed to nowadays version. With the red and green Tauern Loop Ski Trail, a clever lift-system skiing in the Radstadt Tauern Mountain in the Salzburg region became pure snow enjoyment.
