Ski tourism in Obertauern, Austria

Holidays in Obertauern, Salzburg: successful and popular since 1920

The early beginnings of tourism in Obertauern go back a long time. However only after the end of World War 2 did tourism within the region of Obertauern start booming. In 1920 skiing friends and mountaineers still had to walk to Oberauern on foot, with the luggage being carried by horse sleighs. More followers were seen within summer tourism in the region. Between 1925 and 1927 the first Tauren car and motorcycle races take place. Skiing fun was enjoyed within the Tauern region from 1929: that is the year the regular winter schedule for travel connections via the Tauern pass are officially introduced. Obertauern can now be reached throughout the whole year – a milestone for tourism in Austria’s Obertauern.

World War 2 saw a big drawback for tourism in Obertauern. But already in 1948 the first ski lift at Seekarhaus was installed and started. The pistes were still trampled down by skiers until 1960. But from 1950 the avalanche constructions and streets are erected, new lift facilities are built and the hotel industry experienced a major boom. After 1960 Obertauern presented itself as a modern winter sport destination and enjoys a great reputation on an international level. A reputation, which through the extension to the Tauern Loop Ski trail and the cleverly constructed lift-system around the Radstadt Tauern, is still valid to this day.

After all Obertauern is still one of the most popular winter holiday destinations in the Alps.
